Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke held a press conference today to discuss the dilemma of the US dollar. Will his coming clean do anything to save Americans from the economic slump as the dollar hits a three year low against other currencies? The Market Tickers Karl Denninger says Americans should not be quick to trust Bernanke, as the dollar is only further sacrificed to serve his best interests and not that of the public that is being hit hard by the state of the economy.

Shekar Kammulas Debut Film as a director:

The film is about youngsters from Hyderabad who are obsessive of immigrating to United States. It revolves around six characters & their choice of making careers and settling down in United States or in homeland (India).

the film revolves around six characters faced with the choice of making careers, and homes, for themselves in the States, or staying on in India. Ravi, thus, is US-bound, flying in the face of his parents grief at his departure. Balu is determined to follow his footsteps. Phani hesitates on the verge of making the same choice. Srinu, the rebel, is the exception, preferring to study management in India. Sardar dreams of expanding his family business. And Usha, the only girl in the group, is busy with a project that involves interviewing the US-bound. The film starts rather jerkily but, once the characters settle down, it becomes engrossing. The director sets his characters against the backdrop of middle class Hyderabadi society and its magnificent obsession with the US, the H-1 visa and the Green Card. As typified by this couple who are heading off to the States just so their first child can be born there -- and thus become, automatically, an American citizen.

The conflict in the film is between the dollar dreams and human feelings. What, the film asks -- and tries to answer -- happens to those who are left behind, to the aged parents deprived of the support they had taken for granted? Ravis father, thus, suffers a heart attack. The son does not return and the old man is taken care of by friends. When Ravi finally returns, he finds he cannot adjust to the conditions he was brought up in. His choice is made and his return to the States is inevitable.

Can money change human nature to such an extent? Yes, if you look at Ravi. No, if you consider Balu -- who, on the verge of taking his flight, decides to tear up his travel documents and stay back, to get into business with Sardar.

Srinu, meanwhile, fails to get admission into the management institute. His father believes there is no scope for his son in India, but he prefers to hang on, figuring there is always another chance.

Usha, meanwhile, prefers to take notes, rather than take sides.

The film is of, and for, a young audience and sets dollars against culture to provide the conflict. Shekhar Kammula says he was shocked at the indifference, the sense of detachment shown by Indians in the US to their motherland.

An absolute price record was set at the 19th WestLicht camera auction on the 28th of May by lot number 1 that had an estimated price of between 350.000 to 450.000 Euro. After a tough bidder battle starting at 200.000 Euro, lasting for 20 minutes, the highlight of the auction, the extremely rare Leica of the 0-series from 1923, sold for a staggering 1.320.000 Euro (USD 1.900.000) including premium. The bidder, a private collector from Asia, is with this buy the new owner of the most expensive camera ever sold worldwide.

The camera is number 7 in a series of around 25 pieces built to test the market by Leitz in 1923. The camera has been manufactured two years before the official market launch of the Leica (Leitz Camera). It is the only known camera with the "Germany" gravure on the top plate. According to factory documents the camera was sent to New York to be patented, hence it is also the first exported Leica.

The camera is now officially topping the last world record set by a Daguerreotype from 1839, up for auction at WestLicht in December of 2010 that had sold for 732.000 Euro (USD 1.054.000).

Strong Australian dollar poses economic danger

Its a country that appears to have defied the global financial crisis, enjoying years of consecutive growth and a soaring currency.

But its not all "wonder down under" for Australias economy, and as the government prepares to deliver its budget, there could be tougher times ahead.

Despite a commodities-fuelled boom, high government spending, the cost of widespread flooding and a drop in corporation taxes ,mean cuts are likely.

But out of direct control of the government is Australias soaring currency. For the first time since it floated, recent weeks have seen the Australian dollar worth considerably more than its American equivalent: and thats hurting exporters.

One dollar death ride: Russias public transport perils

On the daily commute to work, we all hope to be safe in the hands of public transport. However, the low-cost shuttle buses which operate on Russias roads, called "marshrutkas", are becoming an increasingly lethal option. A high speed chase ... and a miracle that no-one was killed. For more than ten minutes, Volgograd police pursued a speeding shuttle bus which had a drunk driver at the wheel. In another shocking incident two minibuses raced each other in central Russia, leaving 15 people injured. Shuttle buses are very popular throughout Russia due to the low cost of a ride. However, almost everywhere in the country this type of transportation is fraught with danger. According to police, in some Russian cities, shuttle minibuses are involved in more than half of all road accidents. Most of the shuttles belong to private companies, where drivers are often overworked and underpaid. Some of them try to get behind the wheel drunk or on drugs. "This year alone, we performed 40 random checks and found 27 drivers who were using drugs," said Elena Zakharevich from the State Drug Enforcement Authority. For just one day Pyotr Shkumatov, living in Moscow, parked his car and took a shuttle bus to work. He says he almost got killed. "There were four serious violations in a row, very risky ones too: running through a red light, going the wrong way," he said. "I was so scared, I was ready to grab the guy by the hand and make him pull over." Meanwhile, authorities in the Russian southern town of Novorossiysk claim that they have found a solution to the shuttle bus problem: a trendy high-tech one. "This year we are equipping all shuttle buses with satellite tracking equipment and video cameras. It will help us deal with complaints on a case-by-case basis," said Rashid Ibragimov from Novorossiysk Public Transportation Authority. No matter how impressive these plans are, it is still unclear what impact this Big Brother approach will have. However, with a rising number of shuttle bus-related deaths and injuries, it may be one small step in cutting down on the carnage.

Joseph Stiglitz on US rich & poor, corporations & dollar as reserve money

With the US economy remaining weak, and with budget woes hitting confidence in the US dollar, talk about a new global reserve currency is mounting. Professor Joseph Stiglitz a Nobel prize-winning economist of 2001 agrees that the world economy needs a new global reserve currency to help prevent trade imbalances that are reflected in the national debt of the US. RT:Speaking of non-functioning, well, what about the US dollar? You are someone who is calling for a new reserve currency. But why? Some say "what is the alternative"?
Joseph Stiglitz: What Ive argued for is the creation of a global reserve currency. Reserve currencies are, you might think of a store value and the dollar has been very unstable - understandable given the difficulties of the American economy, our performance was not a stellar. But the fact that in a modern globalized economy, 21st Century, it is an anachronism that a single currency would play the pivotal role that the dollar has played. What I argue in my book "Making Globalization Work" is that the dollar reserve currency system contributes to inequality ... and it actually contributes to the weakening of the global economy, because countries are setting aside literally hundreds of billions of dollars, you might say, of precautionary savings. Thats money not spent.
RT: So, you are saying essentially it hurts everybody to have the US dollar as a reserve currency? JS: That is right. What Ive described in the UN commission I chair, explains how we can create a global reserve currency. It is really interesting to be here at Bretton Woods talking about that because Keynes argued for this 75 years ago. In the aftermath of the Great Depression he understood how the links between the UKs problem, UK being the reserve currency then, and that if we are going to have global economic stability we needed to move off of a single country being the reserve currency. Bretton Woods failed from his perspective, in this respect.
RT:And didnt the US disagree and say "we want to be main reserve currency" and got their way? So, would the US have that same power, if world leaders got together today for another Bretton Woods conference?
JS: I think that if that same meeting were held here in Bretton Woods...the world is markedly different. China has close to $3 trillion of reserves, about a third of the global reserves, about $9 trillion. If you own $3 trillion you have some voice in what kind of reserve currency system you want to have. And China has been very clear that it worries about the current dollar-based reserve system right after our UN commission came out and supported it, China supported it, France supported it, Russia supported. So there is a wide understanding of the importance of this idea. And I think if the global economy remains weak, there will be more interest as one of the remedies to the current instability and weakness in the global economy.

Governor Martinez signs $5.4 billion state budget

although the federal government cant agree on a budget... in new mexico... governor martinez today approved the budget passed during the legislative session. its a budget that cuts more than 150 million dollars in state spending. stuart dyson is live at the capitol with the details. the governor made only a few small line item vetoes in the 5 point 4 billion dollar budget - yet another a budget shrunken by the great recession. bottom line - people have less money - spend less money - the states tax revenues shrivel up - state spending shrinks along with it. so the budget that emerged today is very close to the one democrats and republicans hammered out during the legislative session - with the governors team playing a key role in the negotiations. " we did it without furloughing state employees - we did it without decreasing salaries of state employees - and we did it especially without raising taxes - so the reflection i have is that this budget is a balanced budget." the budget cuts state spending by about 3 percent - the governor also signed a bill that will save the state about 111 million dollars a year by increasing state employees and teachers shares of what they pay into pensions - while reducing the states share. the governor - as expected - also signed a 50 million dollar cap on the movie production subsidy - thats expected to save at least 23 million dollars next budget year - at the capitol stuart dyson k-o-b eyewitness news four. the governor also signed a bill banning some people from working with children who are in state custody. under the measure, no employee of the children, youth and families department can work with kids, if that person has been found to have committed child abuse or neglect. it also bans convicted felons from working with kids.
